Family trying to cope with tragedy

She not only suffered third-degree burns over nearly half of her body, but her husband, Howard Emmitt, 25, and elder son,12-year-old Cadarian Herd, died.

Tears rolled down her face as she recalled the tragedy.

"I thought it was a dream," Emmitt said. "I tried to close my eyes and wake up. But it wasn't."

After spending almost four months in the burn unit at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Emmitt is living with her two surviving children in her mother's small two-bedroom south Houston apartment.

"I'm blessed that the Lord spared my life so I could take care of my two children," Emmitt said. Ciara Herd, 9, and Howard Emmitt Jr., 3, survived the fire, but the little boy suffered burns on his hand. "But it's hard, it's really hard."

The most difficult part of coming home from the hospital was wondering how her children would react to her appearance, Emmitt said.

HAWAII NOT?

It's more expensive, but there's more of its raw side to enjoy for anyone else who doesn't like staying in one place for too long.

STAY: Old Wailuku Inn is a historic B&B chock full of Asian antiques like headboards salvaged from Buddhist temples in China. It's an excellent base camp for exploring Haleakala volcano (from $150; oldwailukuinn.com).

The Lahaina Inn features the comfort and romance of a 19th century inn in a restored 60-year-old hostelry, once a general store (from $145; lahainainn.com).

Nearby, the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort boasts fully equipped beachfront condos decked out in traditional Hawaiian hues. Mountain views are the most affordable (from $210; lahainashores.com).

DO: Gawk at the beautiful sunrise on Haleakala, a 10,000-foot volcano featuring a 7-mile wide, 3000-feet deep crater that is the closest you'll ever get to a lunarscape.

Real truths at heart of the Creation stories

Merely reading the "first day" through the "seventh day" has little meaning, and has been called "a constructed creation myth". However, in the Gospels, the Lord Jesus reveals the chronological order of the days of Moses, to where their true meaning is uncovered. Consider the following: A. The Fourth Day of Moses, from Creation Week 1. Covers the period 4.6 Billion BC to 245 Million BC a) Depicts the creation of the (other) celestial bodies B. The fifth day of Moses, from Restoration Week 1 1. Covers the period 245 Million BC to 65 Million BC a) Depicts the creation of "sea monsters" and birds b) Discovered life forms i. ichthyosaurs, mosasaurs, pliosaurs, plesiosaurs, and archaeopteryx C. The sixth day of Moses, from Restoration Week 2 1. Covers the period 65 Million BC to 42 Million BC a) Depicts the creation of herbivores, large animals, and the "remaking" of mankind into God's image b) Discovered life forms i.

Developers move closer to launch of much-anticipated sci-fi game

They play a video game every day, and they take it extremely seriously.

But they're not the guys living in mom's basement. They're the creative team at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. In less than a year, the science-fiction universe they're building in an office park in east Mesa will come to life for an eager worldwide audience in Stargate Worlds.

Until then, the team at the Valley's only video-game studio will continue creating new worlds for a franchise that has existed in its fans' minds and on screens big and small for the past 14 years. .

3rd bond-rating firm downgrades McClatchy

The McClatchy Co.'s bond rating fell another notch Friday, as Fitch Ratings downgraded the Sacramento publisher deeper into non-investment grade, or junk-bond, territory.

Although the Fitch downgrade doesn't directly affect McClatchy's borrowing costs, it represents another sign that the investment community is increasingly anxious about newspapers.

Separately, the Florida investment firm that essentially triggered McClatchy's takeover of Knight Ridder Inc. – and was once McClatchy's largest public shareholder – has ended its investment in McClatchy and other newspaper chains.
