Obama - Most Liberal Senator

And the jilted Romnuts are declaring that they'll be supporting him.

Leftards in GOP disguise.

"National Journal magazine is reporting that Obama was the most liberal senator of 2007, according to the vote ratings it does every year for members of Congress. Clinton, meanwhile, ranks as the 16th most-liberal senator."

The young mother's joy, however, turned to sorrow on Saturday as a bomb detonated as Joshua Reeves' Humvee drove down a Baghdad street. Leslie Reeves was still in the hospital with her new baby when she learned she was a widow.

"Everyone is just deeply saddened," said Paula Fortner, owner of Hendersonville's American Academy of Dance.

Leslie, who has danced since the age of six, was a former student of the academy as well as a teacher there as recently as two days before her delivery. Her mother, Marikay Burke, is the office manager at the studio.

Fortner said an account has been set up to help Reeves and her newborn son at any Regions Bank.

Pastor Tim Reynolds of Hendersonville's First Presbyterian Church was all set to visit the new baby in the hospital Saturday when he received a call that Joshua Reeves had been killed.

Key West: The southernmost slump

At Key West's quaint Tropical Inn on Duval Street, the communal microwave is heating a lot of food these days.

''More guests have been bringing back leftovers from the restaurants,'' said Jane Lowe, owner of the inn. ``Instead of going out for dinner and lunch the next day, they'll eat those leftovers for lunch. We see a lot of people cutting corners.''

Most of the 312 businesses and 39 kiosks now operating on Duval Street are feeling the pinch of the penny-pinching vacationers. Some are struggling to survive in what normally would be considered high season.

''It's slow on Duval Street, but it's slow all over the country,'' said Virginia Panico, executive vice president of the Key West Chamber of Commerce. ``There are times when we don't feel it, or are the last to feel it.

Catholic school closures, vouchers are in national spotlight

When President George W. Bush gave his State of the Union address Jan. 28, he briefly mentioned something Catholics know all too well: Their inner-city schools are closing.

Although the president did not specifically name Catholic schools, the reference to "faith-based schools" that are "disappearing at an alarming rate in many of America's inner cities," clearly described what has been happening to the nation's inner-city Catholic schools.

According to the National Catholic Educational Association, enrollment in Catholic elementary schools has dropped 15 percent nationwide since 2001-02, and more than 212 U.S. Catholic schools were closed or consolidated during the 2006-07 school year.

In response to the steady decline of inner-city "faith-based schools," the president said this spring he would "convene a White House summit aimed at strengthening these lifelines of learning."

Sister Dale McDonald, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the NCEA's director of public policy and educational research, has attended some of the planning sessions for the summit, scheduled to take place in late April.

The Last Word: Akon's Finds Legal Troubles, Beyonce Makes the Naughty ...

In happier Akon news, the singer joined Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo and Kanye West among this year's Grammy Award nominees. Although the awards won't be given out until February, Akon already knows what he's going to do should he win one of the four Grammy he's nominated for.

"I'm calling my mom," he told MTV. "She's probably going to scream, 'cause she's always said, 'You know what, you're gonna win.'"

Now that he has someone in mind to make his one phone call should he end up in the big house, maybe now Akon can get that "Sorry, Blame it On Me" Long Arm of the Law remix with fellow law-abiding singer R. Kelly in the can too. To keep his name out there, of course.
